In the early days of UK wind-farm development, an important question was how much wind-resource existed, depending on the constraints of land-use and regulation as well as the windiness of the terrain.
We developed a bespoke C and FORTRAN PC application which related several sources of geographical information onto a common basis (the OS National Grid). We also spent many hours manually converting paper map information into coordinated data as input for this app. Cross-checks at several points were made to calibrate data and ensure quality of estimates.
